John MacCuish was academically trained in theoretical computer science and entered industry by moving theory to applications — translating math to software by designing or modifying existing algorithms to perform applied tasks efficiently and effectively. He has worked in numerous industries from finance to early drug discovery, whether inventing and implementing scientific software, performing exploratory data analysis and data mining, building predictive models (classification, regression, time series, survival models), or deploying unsupervised learning methods (clustering, association rule learning). More recently he has worked as a data scientist for marketing science, game analytics, and other entertainment industry business lines (film, TV, consumer products), in both small and big data environments and pipelines. John has worked for high tech startups, large corporations, academia, government, and founded and ran his own high tech business for many years. Prior to a career in computer science, John was a classically trained fine artist (painting/drawing/printmaking) and art object restorer/conservator (ceramics, furniture, statuary, ethnographic mixed media). Throughout both of his careers he has worked in or managed small, dedicated teams. He likes to get his hands dirty, regardless.
